Thomas Swinburn, Class of 2016

Date: 03 Jan 2025

Dilworth is incredibly proud that one of its own, Thomas Swinburn, Class of 2016, has been named a Rhodes Scholar, one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world.

Thomas recently graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, and Bachelor of Medical Science with First Class Honours from Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.

The day before his graduation, he returned to Dilworth to have his photo taken for our ‘wall of fame’ and to have a celebratory morning tea with Headmaster Dan Reddiex, Head of Senior Campus Tom Murdoch, CEO Trust Board Office CEO Ewen Anderson and other Dilworth staff.

Thomas said the application process for the Rhodes Scholarship got him thinking back on the journey that had got him to this point. He says Dilworth played a massive part:
“ Dilworth fostered an academic and intellectual curiosity and gave me the resources to explore various interests whilst instilling a strong work ethic in me. But more than that, it allowed me to reflect on my own privilege and learn to relate compassionately to a diverse group”.

Thomas will start on the wards as a junior doctor at Auckland City Hospital in April before heading to the UK to begin his studies at Oxford University in October 2025.

Dilworth School and staff wish Thomas every success in his exciting new chapter. We are all inspired by the impact he has already made on the lives of others, and we know there is so much more to come.
