Reading matters at Dilworth, and our library team, Teacher Librarian Ms Annie White and Librarian/Archivist Ms Lorraine Clark, are always coming up with inventive ways to encourage students to read.
This year’s initiative, Book in a Bag, is designed to get students reading regularly. Our library team knows that if students start reading for pleasure each day, it will form a daily ritual that will expand their minds and horizons and make studying any subject easier.
How does it work?

Students choose a book and ensure it is in their bag at all times. Our Senior Leadership Team members, easily spotted with their red lanyards, can approach a student and ask them to discuss the book they have in their bag. Equally, the student can ask the SLT member about the book they are reading.
There is more to this, though! Our SLT members also have vouchers for hot chocolate to hand out after they have discussed the book. The hot chocolates are made by our very own Dilworth baristas, Brew Brothers, who apparently are very popular… Brew Brothers is based at the Dilworth Library and runs a great early-morning coffee (and hot chocolate) making service.
Every fortnight at Friday assembly, a staff member and a student share the book they are reading and why they chose it. Last week, Ms Mia Silverman discussed the book "Here One Moment" by Liane Moriarty, and Gregory Archer, Year 9, talked about “7 Men and the Secrets of Their Greatness” by Eric Metaxa.
Happy reading!
