Dilworth Old Boy Mudiwa Makaza, Class of 2020 and a Staples Education Foundation (SEF) scholarship recipient, returned to Dilworth on the eve of his graduation from Auckland University.
He sat down for a conversation with Ed Whiffin, Event and Community Engagement Manager with Dilworth’s Advancement Team, where Ed learned all about Mudiwa’s interesting story, the unexpected twist in his career path and the pivotal role his Staples Education Foundation Scholarship played along the way to help shape his success*.
What is it like to be graduating today?
Happy. But it’s a bittersweet reminder of how quickly time passes. I vividly remember starting in Year 7 at the Junior Campus in 2014, and now I’m graduating university!
Can you tell us how your Dilworth journey led to your career and study pathway?
My journey began with a few coincidences. While out with my Mum, I helped an elderly lady who subsequently asked if I attended Dilworth—my mum had never heard of this school before. Soon after, a family friend also recommended the School, highlighting its positive impact on her son.
It was a little daunting initially. I had thought boarding school meant you would never speak to your parents, but I soon realised it was the opposite, and we were encouraged to stay connected with our families. The friendships I formed and the support from teachers were invaluable.
Aiming to become a doctor, I switched from Economics to Biology in Year 12. However, I didn’t get into medical school and later transitioned from Health Science to a Bachelor of Science, specialising in Psychology, at University. As I explored my interests, I became fascinated by financial markets and learning through online resources.
As a Staples Education Foundation scholarship recipient, I received invaluable support and in my penultimate year at The University of Auckland while completing my Bachelor of Science (BSc) sought guidance from Haydn Staples who encouraged me to finish my degree, while Jane Haines, SEF Trustee and Corporate Account Manager, facilitated a meeting with Westpac staff who generously shared their insights and experiences in financial markets trading. Despite lacking formal qualifications, I subsequently applied for their graduate programme in financial markets. Westpac saw potential in me and accepted me into their institutional banker programme along with only one other. This was the first time anyone had been accepted into this programme in a decade.
My swift transition from medicine to banking has been rewarding. I’ve completed my Bachelor of Science, specialising in Psychology, and I believe my experience highlights the importance of initiative and passion in pursuing new opportunities.
Who or what inspired you during your time at Dilworth?
My biggest inspiration came from the Old Boys and Alumni who visited the school to share their experiences. It made me realise how incredible the opportunities we had at Dilworth truly were—something you appreciate even more after leaving.
Tell us about the Staples Education Scholarship that you received and what it meant for you.
The Staples scholarship has really been a game changer in allowing me to apply myself to my studies and enjoy student life without constant concern over finances. It also was a source of support and guidance through regular interactions with my buddy in my first year, my mentor, and the Staples team, namely Karen and Jane. It is difficult to describe the profound impact the scholarship has had on my tertiary education. In the same way, it is truly difficult to imagine what my university experience would have been like without the scholarship.
Can you consider the different elements of the scholarship and tell us about your mentor's role and impact, the networking opportunities you were given, and, of course, the funding? Anything else?
The non-financial elements of the scholarship were just as impactful as the funding itself. SEF's holistic approach to supporting students sets it apart, offering valuable mentorship and networking. I developed strong relationships with my buddy and mentor, who provided guidance on academic matters and life beyond university, sharing insights from their experiences.
The regular bi-weekly meetings with General Manager Karen Bennett were also key, providing consistent accountability and helping me stay focused on my goals. Her genuine support was invaluable.
Finally, the financial assistance helped reduce stress, allowing me to concentrate on my studies and personal growth.
What would you say to any student about to receive the Staples Education Scholarship in 2024 and beyond? How will it change their life?
I would say that they have received an incredible act of generosity, which will guide them through their critical first years outside of School and set them up for success in their degree, careers, and life beyond. I would urge them to truly utilise all of the support and resources that the scholarship gives and strive to affirm the decision made by SEF to give them such an opportunity through hard work and the genuine desire to go far and pay it forward. I would also say congratulations, of course!
What would you like to say to Haydn Staples (founder), the SEF Board, and mentors?
I want to say a massive thank you to Haydn, the Board and SEF staff. The opportunity you have all provided me will forever be among the largest contributors to any life successes I may achieve. Your belief in my potential, coupled with the incredible support system you've established, has made a profound difference in my life. Through this guidance, I have gained the skills and knowledge necessary to advance in my personal and professional life and the confidence to chase my dreams without hesitation.
Finally, can you tell us about your dreams and aspirations for the future?
I am building a finance career as an institutional banker at Westpac. I have found a real interest in Structured Finance/Securitisation, which I wish to pursue in the near term. I continue to build on my aspirations one step at a time, remaining open to all opportunities that may present themselves as I work in banking.
