Alumni Spotlight: Michael Ukwu, Class of 2021

Date: 21 Jan 2025

As Michael Ukwu graduates from AUT with a Bachelor of Communications, he reflects on his time at Dilworth and beyond. He describes the experience as surreal, recalling how it feels like just yesterday that he began his journey at the school.

Having moved from Thailand to South Auckland at the age of seven, Michael navigated a dynamic childhood. He started his Dilworth journey at Mangatāwhiri, Dilworth’s rural campus, in Year Nine and embraced every opportunity at the school, diving into sports, academics, and debating. The small school environment allowed him to forge lasting friendships with his peers. He says that even if he doesn't see some of them for a year, it feels like no time has passed when they reunite. As many Old Boys say, “You have an instant connection with Old Boys.”

During his time at school, Michael discovered a love for Media Studies and realised he wanted to build a career in this field, envisioning it as something he could do every day. This passion for media inspired him to pursue a Bachelor of Communications at AUT.

One significant aspect of Michael’s journey was receiving a Staples Education Scholarship (SEF). Initially uncertain about its implications, he soon recognised it as a blessing that alleviated financial stress for both himself and his family. The scholarship provided invaluable mentorship and guidance, ensuring he was well-prepared for university life. For many students transitioning from high school to university, Michael acknowledges the challenges—both financially and mentally—and expresses deep gratitude for the support he received from SEF.

The scholarship's impact on Michael extended beyond financial aid. His mentor, Tom, played a crucial role, offering industry insights and practical guidance that helped shape Michael's career path. The networking opportunities he encountered allowed him to connect with fellow Dilworth alumni and industry professionals, fostering a sense of community that inspired him to pursue his goals and give back.

For current and future scholarship recipients, Michael advises, “Make the most of every opportunity. Be a sponge, soak up new lessons, and step out of your comfort zone. You'll be amazed at how much you've grown by the end of your studies.” He emphasises the importance of enjoying the university experience and balancing fun with personal and academic development.

In gratitude, Michael extends heartfelt thanks to Haydn Staples and the Staples Education Foundation Board and the mentors and staff who supported him throughout his journey. Their commitment has made a lasting impact, not only on Michael but on many Dilworth boys who benefit from their generosity.

Looking ahead, Michael aspires to work in an agency or perhaps start his own, focusing on advertising and storytelling. His ultimate goal is to create positive change in the world and leave a legacy that he can be proud of—a goal that was instilled in him by his mother, whose unwavering support has been his greatest inspiration.

As he embarks on this exciting chapter, Michael Ukwu exemplifies the spirit of Dilworth—proactive, driven, and committed to making a difference.
